May 1

May 3, 2009 · 1 Comment

We thought we would share a few photos of how the farm is doing as of May 1.  We seem to be ahead on some things and behind on others.  Most of the initial rototilling is complete for the 2009 active beds.  2 weeks of market greens are in the ground.  Lower greenhouse crops are starting to look liks something. May 1st was also a significant day as we picked up the new farm van (traded in the truck) and got things organized with our new staff person Pam.

Glee, Satisfaction, Frustration…

June 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Ahh the ups and the downs of farming.

Glee

Arrived home Friday to discover that neighbouring farmer had found a sufficient dry window to be able to disc Garden Plot C.  Now we can plant out our tomatoes, squash, beans, etc….

Satisfaction

We did our first market of 2008!  It was a week earlier than last year and our sales numbers were up over last year’s opening weekend (thanks in large part to rhubarb).  It was so great to be back and see all the regulars.  In addition to the rhubarb we had spicy and original salad mix, sorrel, edible flowers and green onions.

Frustration

Came home to try and get some tilling done before the forecast rain.  Target was the edges of the new plot and the beds for this weekend’s greens planting.  10 minutes in, the tiller broke.  Like really broke.  As opposed to the belt challenges last year, this was “I wish I was a welder” broke.  Arghh.  Metal fatigue at the joint there the arms attach to the body.  %$@!  Stay tuned for innovative, temporary fixes and whether our friends who weld can repair it.
